Teaching in ECE is complex and demanding work. The highly specialised skills require ongoing learning with current theory and research.

ELP uses a variety of lenses to develop professional learning programmes including leadership and community of learners. Professional learning is not just about attending one-off seminars/workshops. The effectiveness of these experiences will depend on the ways in which each centre/teacher integrates this information and knowledge with the team of teachers in the ECE setting. One of the critical practices for enabling success is the bringing into the setting of an ‘outsider’, mentor or critical friend to help integrate and bed down new ideas and theories.

ELP has a group of highly skilled mentor/critical friends who can work alongside your teams. Depending on the requirements of the centre involved project facilitators will be responsive using a variety of processes including workshops, one-to-one mentoring, specific coaching etc.

Professional learning must be integrated into the daily life of the centre. Only then can teachers build their own research capacity as well as make the changes in their settings that will support improved learning for children.

Alison Brierley and Jo Colbert have put together in-centre professional learning programmes for centres located in Auckland and on the North Shore.
