Te Rina Warren is a Massey University lecturer with particular expertise in indigenous studies and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Te Rina's presentation is about the Treaty in the context of Te Whāriki.
Mari Ropata-Te Hei is also a lecturer at Massey University. With graphic designer, Te Iwihoko Rangihirawea, Mari developed the updated whāriki graphic and cover. Mari will share the significance of the design.
Brenda Soutar is a leader at Mana Tamariki. She was a member of the writing team for the update of Te Whāriki. Brenda will present a Māori perspective on Te Whāriki as a metaphor for learning within the context of early learning. This includes the significance of harakeke, weaving and whakatauiī (proverbs)
We have 27 years experience designing and implementing high-quality Māori language immersion education. Our most recent ERO review noted the high-quality resources to support children learning in te reo Māori developed by our teachers. “Assessment information is gathered in a range of ways to demonstrate learning. Paki ako (learning stories) have been developed in the kōhanga reo and are used extensively to monitor learning, inform programme planning and as the basis of action research topics for kaimahi.”
In August 2017, Wendy Lee attended this course in Palmerston North. Here’s what she had to say:
"...It was so wonderful to go to professional education that truly brings everyone to the space of thoughtful engagement … This day brought the heart of Te Whāriki into view … I would recommend this as an important professional learning event for all NZ teachers …"
Wendy Lee, Director, ELP (Educational Leadership Project Ltd)
